Man Caregiver - Nagaland

May 7, 2016 Laura Read

his photo has sold a couple of times to nonprofits telling stories about gender roles in indigenous cultures. I met up with this man and his family after negotiating with my guide to spend the day by myself in Touphema. The rest of our crew went off to another village for a tour. At the time, visitors were required to be with a guide, so I was lucky that my guide was flexible and trusting of me. Most of the villagers spoke English, and everyone I met was fascinated that I had left my group and was alone.

Angami Basket Makers - Nagaland

April 29, 2016 Laura Read

I love photographing people who are making things, and I love how people make things with pieces of plants - such as baskets, nets and hats. In Nagaland, India, the men weave the baskets and other tools, and the women weave the clothing. The Angami tribe, which I visited in Touphema, Nagaland have a coop in which they create utilitarian baskets for gathering crops, hunting, and doing chores around home.

A Warrior Grins - Nagaland

April 28, 2016 Laura Read

I love the expression on this warrior-performer's face in Touphema, Nagaland, a remote region of India. He's wearing Sekrenyi Festival regalia used to celebrate virility, harvest and good fortune. Many people of these hilltop villages in the Eastern Himalaya speak English....

A Dog, a Smoker and a Gargoyle, Monti neighborhood, Rome, Italy

April 21, 2016 Laura Read

In this little plaza, where people were commuting home on bicycles, conferring over tourist maps, or walking their dogs, you could carry out a drink from the bar and sip it by the lazy fountain, thus enjoying one of Rome's distinct pleasures, dolce far niente (or pleasant idleness).

Photographing Children, Scanno, Italy

April 21, 2016 Laura Read

In this plaza in Scanno, Italy, I spent several days watching the children at play while their parents shared stories in the background. I love the way the children's forms punctuate the plaza's open space, and I love how the tree is an anchor reaching upward right through the middle of everything.

While I was interviewing Oliver Nagle, right, and his father, Pat Nagle, left, about their livestock management practices in the Burren region of County Clare, Ireland, an emergency in the barn put a stop to the conversation. A cow was having problems giving birth. A vet arrived - her name was Geraldine van Leeuwen - and the two men joined her in the birth stall. They allowed me to photographs the scene. These photos record what transpired. WARNING: These are not for the squeamish!
