his photo has sold a couple of times to nonprofits telling stories about gender roles in indigenous cultures. I met up with this man and his family after negotiating with my guide to spend the day by myself in Touphema. The rest of our crew went off to another village for a tour. At the time, visitors were required to be with a guide, so I was lucky that my guide was flexible and trusting of me. Most of the villagers spoke English, and everyone I met was fascinated that I had left my group and was alone.

Angami Basket Makers - Nagaland

I love photographing people who are making things, and I love how people make things with pieces of plants - such as baskets, nets and hats. In Nagaland, India, the men weave the baskets and other tools, and the women weave the clothing. The Angami tribe, which I visited in Touphema, Nagaland have a coop in which they create utilitarian baskets for gathering crops, hunting, and doing chores around home.

One of my photography teachers, the great Norman Mauskopf, told me to begin my editing sessions by taking a close look at the first shot captured in any sequence of candid photography. "The first shot is almost always the best," he said. "Inspect your work and see if it's true."
